Celebrations take on a carnival feel as Boun Lai Heua Fai boats light up the Mekong River. Families bond over the tradition of floating small boats carrying offerings down the river. The boats are made from woven banana leaves and are decorated with candles and flowers. People pay respect to the Mekong, the Mother River, for providing water and strengthen their connection with her, asking for blessings and good luck.
As darkness falls, people gather to make personal offerings of sky lanterns, made using traditional methods of wrapping bamboo frames with oiled rice paper. These act as a memorial to the ancestors and deliver wishes to the heavens as the lanterns float luminously into the sky.
